Cartilage Repairs

Injured cartilage cannot heal on its own, so a physician can use multiple surgical techniques to repair, regenerate, and replace the cartilage. Cartilage repairs can be performed on almost any joint but are most commonly performed on knees. The primary candidates for these procedures are patients that have a specific cartilage injury rather than a widespread damage to the cartilage like arthritis. Chondroplasties can reduce knee pain, restore function of the knee, and possibly slow down the degeneration of cartilage in the future. Chondroplasties are often surgically repaired by debridement, which is where the surgeon removes potential irritants within the joint such as loose pieces of cartilage. Once the loose bodies are removed, the surgeon will flush the joint with saline.
